Component 4: Wind energy storage solutions

One of the main obstacles wind energy is facing nowadays is its dependency on weather and wind conditions, i.e. statutory provision: energy storage technology could ensure a permanent and reliable energy supply and, thus, to make wind energy an even stronger alternative to "raditional" energy sources.

Although highly demanded, the research on storage solution is still not "big business" but mainly done by researchers and single initiatives/associations so that much progress could be reached by systematisation and international co-operation/exchange. The project plans to contribute to this, focussing on the most promising storage option that exist or are investigated currently. The first step will be an analysis of existing technological approaches (pump storage, compressed air, hydrogen) regarding advantages, disadvantages, technological implementation and existing obstacles/problems.

As the involved project partners have focussed on single aspects of the problem so far, the international exchange and co-operation will enable a new quality and new form of compilation of results and information exchange even at this stage. The elaborated analyses imply not only the storage itself but also the re-conversion into electricity. Based on these analyses, recommendations on storage technologies for wind turbines will be elaborated: they will present current status, further steps to be taken and describe exemplary implementations.
