Latest dissemination activities on Storage solution work (Comp 4)
11-11-10 - Kristina Koebe
The project partner Hydrogen Technology Initiative M-V has disseminated the results of the analyses on storage solutions further - the related report was presented on two major events in the SBR. In addition, the related recommendations which are under elaboration were discussed with experts:
The first event was the VIII. Energiesymposium in Stralsund on November 3rd. The audience consisted of decision makers, scientists and representatives of the industrial sector. A lively discussion arised between the speaker and the audience. Energy producers are interested in the analysed storage solutions and welcome the intermediary work of the project between the three groups as named before. After the presentatio,n personal conversation with both scientists and energy producers/ grid operators lead to the agreement to work further on that topic of storage solutions due to the topic's urgency.
Likewise, the participation at the 3rd Baltic Energy Event in Vilnius, Lithuania on November 9th lead to the same results. In cooperation with South Baltic project "S.B. OFFER", a direct connection to the offshore wind industry was established. Using intersections and common fields of project work the integration of storage solutions to offshore wind energy succeeded on that Event. Major investor's interest was awoken by the presentation and fruitful discussion afterwards. Both Events were a success for the dissemination work of the report and recommendations which will be finalized and published in the beginning of December.

located outside Malmö in Öresund. The study visit was conducted with the
Swedish partner in SB OFF.ER consisting of municipalities from Karlskrona and
Sölvesborg. Invited were also local industries who have shown interest as
subcontractors for future offshore projects, all together about 30 persons. Vattenfall is the owner of Lillgrund. The wind
farm went into operation for 5 years ago. It consists of 48 WT, each with 2.3
MW. The entire wind farm produces about 350 GWh per year.
On the same day was also visited EWP Tower
Production located in the Kockums shipyard in Malmö. Several offshore projects are planning off
the coast of Karlskrona and Sölvesborg such as Blekinge Offshore with a total
of 500-700 WT in the same project – 2500 MW/ 8 TWh per year. Therefore,
purposes of this trip are both give stimulus, creating networks of local
subcontractors and to collect experiences.

10-12-12 - Kristina Koebe
In balanced way information on grid regulation and storage solutions were exchanged. A grid operators’ task is to insure a constant supply of consumers with electric energy. Facing a difference between feed-in and demand causes a need to regulate the grid concerning current and frequency. In the near future new regulation solutions have to be applied to avoid cut-offs. Regulation energy is most expensive and puts storage solutions in a position to offer compatible prices. Grid extension as well as efficient storage solution of different scales is in focus of the grid operators in the near future. Now a closer evaluation has to happen to find the most feasible solution for a certain task. Both, regional and global solutions will play a role in that matter. For Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania this means to start a discussion on the analysed storage solution of the WEBSR2-project jointly with public administration, grid operators, inhabitants and experts. Another question that has to be answered is who will be the investor of storages. Today large suppliers and grid operators act according to causative principle. The provider of fluctuating energy (wind and solar energy) should from their perspective be the one who is about to facilitate storages. But there is no incentive right now to do that because even if these providers are cut off they receive compensation. From a macro-economic view this causes inefficiencies which can contribute to higher energy prices and slow down the energy revolution.

10-11-19 - Kristina Koebe
Aiming at the finding of appropriate locations a discussion was held with Dr. Carsten Obst as a representative of State Office of Environment, Conservation and Geology. The Hydrogen Technology Initiative got wised up about possible sites to establish hydrogen caverns to store that gas as an energy carrier. Basic prerequisites and conditions which have to be fulfilled before applying that storage solutions where discussed. A result is that there are plenty of appropriate sites in the state which either are unused yet or in charge for energy suppliers to store natural gas. Furthermore alternative approaches to use caverns where openly discussed and adjudged to be brought into focus as well. On of these ideas is to apply caverns as water reservoirs for pumped hydro electricity.
In a next step the storage solutions will be presented to potential investors aiming at the installation of a pilot facility.

At the meeting with representatives of the county council of Bad Doberan county the idea of storing surplus wind energy in appropriate technologies where presented. The feedback was throughout positive but sceptic as well. A pumped hydro plant was considered to be too big to be accepted by the citizens and visitors. However the concept was considered to be a model solution to regulate energy feed-in to the grid and an exemplary analysis will be supported. Furthermore intersections with other projects where notified and a future cooperation was agreed. Especially e-mobility in connection to hydrogen as energy carrier which has to be stored properly was seen as bridge between existing projects.

Wind energy event will become part of the "Long Night of Science" in Rostock
10-11-08 - Kristina Koebe
The wind energy event to be implemented in component 5 of the WEBSR2-project will take place as a cooperation with the "Long Night of Science" - an annual event that is very popular in Rostock and welcomes a lot of visitors every year. Thus, the opening of the wind energy event, which will take place in the pedestrian zone of Rostock's inner city centre, will take place on the 28 April 2011 and remain open to public until the 1 May 2011.
WEBSR2 presented on the 5th Climate Protection Conference
10-11-08 - Kristina Koebe
The Hydrogen Technology Initiative M-V (HTI) is a regular
guest at the annual event in Stralsund.
This year the HTI was able to present its work in the WEBSR2 project dealing
with storage technologies for fluctuating wind energy. The aim is to elaborate
suitable configurations of production and storage of electrical energy from
wind. Due to the large share of wind energy in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
this topic is widely discussed on all levels. That is why the feedback on the
HTI’s presentation was downright positive. Even the interest of a private
investor could be aroused. Focussing on the two storage solutions pumped hydro
storage and hydrogen storage in caverns a discussion on the state’s storage
potentials arose resulting in the need of pumped hydro storage if ecological
responsibly facilitated. Sceptical voices could be convinced by the touristic
attractiveness of a pumped hydro storage if designed in an appropriate way. The
integration of green energy production and touristic use of the region were assessed
to be compatible.
